Kimi Antonelli won the Miami Grand Prix after recovering from a poor start to extend his championship lead. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver held off Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to claim his fourth victory of 2026. However, the race will be remembered for two major crashes on lap 12 that brought out the Safety Car. Isack Hadjar hit the barriers at Turn 15 while Pierre Gasly suffered a terrifying flip at Turn 17 that left his Alpine upside down against the wall.
What Crashes Happened at Miami GP 2026
Two separate crashes on lap 12 triggered a Safety Car deployment.
Isack Hadjar crashed his Red Bull at the Turn 15 chicane. The impact broke his rear wing and damaged the suspension. He could not continue and retired from the race.
Pierre Gasly’s crash at Turn 17 proved more dramatic. His Alpine went airborne after hitting a kerb and flipped completely. The car landed upside down and slid into the barriers. Gasly climbed out unharmed but the car was destroyed. The incident occurred independently from Hadjar’s crash moments earlier.
Both crashes happened within seconds of each other. The Safety Car controlled the field while marshals cleared debris from both incidents. Racing resumed after several laps under caution.

What Penalties Were Given at Miami GP 2026
Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen both received time penalties after the Miami Grand Prix. The stewards investigated separate incidents after the race ended. Leclerc got a 20-second penalty that dropped him from sixth to eighth place. Verstappen received five seconds for a pit exit violation but kept fifth position.
Leclerc spun at Turn 3 on the final lap and hit the barrier. He continued driving but cut multiple chicanes on the way to the finish line. The stewards ruled he left the track and gained a lasting advantage. Officials said his mechanical problem did not justify cutting the chicanes. They converted a drive-through penalty to 20 seconds because the race had already finished.
Verstappen crossed the white line at the pit exit when rejoining under the Safety Car. The stewards reviewed camera footage after the race. The video clearly showed his front left tire crossed the solid white line. Officials applied the standard five-second penalty for the violation.
The penalties changed the final results significantly. Lewis Hamilton moved from seventh to sixth after Leclerc dropped two places. Verstappen stayed fifth because the gap to cars behind was large enough. Ferrari also paid a 200 euro fine for Leclerc speeding in the pit lane during Friday practice.
Weekend penalties before the race included Isack Hadjar being disqualified from qualifying for a technical breach. He started from the pit lane. Kimi Antonelli received a five-second penalty in the Sprint race for track limits. Gabriel Bortoleto was disqualified from the Sprint for an engine infringement.
Antonelli Overcomes Poor Start to Win
Antonelli started from pole position but immediately lost the lead. His poor getaway became a recurring theme this season. Norris and Leclerc both passed him in the opening corners. Antonelli dropped to third before the first lap ended.
The Safety Car on lap 12 reset the race. Antonelli used the restart to attack Norris for the lead. He reclaimed first position and controlled the pace for the remainder of the race. Norris kept pressure throughout but could not find a way past. Piastri completed a McLaren one-two-three with Mercedes in third.
George Russell finished fourth for Mercedes. Max Verstappen took fifth for Red Bull after gambling on hard tires during the Safety Car period. The strategy failed as the tires lost performance in the final laps.
Ferrari Strategy Mistake Costs Leclerc Podium
Charles Leclerc finished sixth after a costly strategy error. Ferrari pitted him early expecting rain that never arrived. The decision left Leclerc on worn tires for the final stint. He dropped from podium contention to sixth place.
Team radio captured Leclerc’s frustration. He told his engineer that next time Ferrari makes a decision they should talk to him first. The message highlighted tension over the strategy call that wasted a strong starting position.
Lewis Hamilton finished seventh for Ferrari. He ran a different strategy from Leclerc but could not challenge for the podium. Ferrari scored 14 points combined but watched Mercedes and McLaren pull further ahead in the constructors’ championship.
Four Retirements Hit Red Bull and Alpine
Four cars failed to finish the Miami Grand Prix. Hadjar and Gasly retired from their crashes. Nico Hulkenberg retired his Audi with mechanical issues. Liam Lawson also retired his Racing Bulls car though no specific cause was reported.
Red Bull Racing lost both cars from points positions. Hadjar started from the pit lane after his qualifying disqualification. His crash ended any chance of recovery. Verstappen survived to finish fifth but Red Bull’s weekend highlighted their ongoing struggles.
Alpine lost Gasly to the spectacular crash and Colapinto finished eighth. The team scored four points but the car damage from Gasly’s flip will require extensive repairs before the next race.
Championship Standings After Miami
Antonelli extended his championship lead with the victory. He now has 100 points after four races. George Russell sits second with 80 points. Charles Leclerc holds third with 63 points. Lando Norris climbed to fourth with 51 points after his second-place finish.
Mercedes dominates the constructors’ championship with 180 points. Ferrari sits second with 106 points. McLaren closed the gap to third with 76 points after the strong Miami result. The one-two finish marked McLaren’s best performance of 2026.
Red Bull Racing holds fourth with 26 points. Their struggles continued in Miami despite Verstappen’s fifth place. Alpine, Haas, Williams, and the remaining teams fight for midfield positions well behind the top three.
Two crashes on lap 12 caused a Safety Car. Isack Hadjar crashed at Turn 15 breaking his rear wing. Pierre Gasly’s car flipped at Turn 17 and landed upside down. Both drivers retired but Gasly walked away unharmed.
Kimi Antonelli won from pole position despite a poor start. Lando Norris finished second and Oscar Piastri third.
No penalties were given during the Sunday race. Isack Hadjar was disqualified from qualifying for a technical breach and started from the pit lane. Kimi Antonelli received a 5-second penalty in Saturday’s Sprint race.
