Antonelli Wins Canadian GP 2026 After Russell Retires

Canadian GP 2026 highlights Russell retires from the lead Montreal

Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix after George Russell retired from the lead with a power unit failure on Lap 30. Russell had started from pole and controlled the race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve before his Mercedes stopped dead on track. Antonelli inherited the front and drove clean to the flag, winning by 10.768 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton gave Ferrari their best result of 2026 with a composed second-place finish. He held off Max Verstappen in a tense battle at the hairpin, with the Red Bull driver settling for third. Charles Leclerc rounded out the top four for Ferrari. Hamilton took Driver of the Day honours with roughly 27 percent of the fan vote. It was the kind of afternoon Ferrari needed badly.

2026 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX — KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Winner: Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) — 4th consecutive win, 25 pts
  • P2: Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) +10.768s — Driver of the Day (~27%)
  • P3: Max Verstappen (Red Bull) +11.276s
  • Russell DNF: Power unit failure from the lead, Lap 30. Stewards investigation open.
  • Norris DNF: Mechanical failure, Lap 40. Wrong tyre gamble from the start.
  • Albon DNF: Retired Lap 13 after Piastri collision.
  • Perez DNF: Rear suspension failure attempting to reach the pits.
  • Hadjar penalties: 10s time penalty (dangerous driving) + 10s stop-go (yellow flag violation).
  • Piastri penalty: 10s for contact with Albon. Served during VSC window.
  • VSC deployed: Debris at Turn 11. Marshal entered live track surface.
  • Championship: Antonelli leads Russell by 43 points after Round 05.

Russell’s retirement remains under investigation by the stewards. His Mercedes stopped on track without warning while he led comfortably, and the power unit failure is now being reviewed. Consequently, the championship picture shifted sharply. Antonelli’s fourth consecutive win extends his lead over George Russell at the 2026 Canadian GP to 43 points. That gap is the largest it has been all season.

The stewards had a crowded afternoon. Isack Hadjar collected a 10-second time penalty for dangerous defensive driving against Leclerc. He then made things worse with a 10-second stop-go penalty after telemetry confirmed he failed to lift at all under yellow flags. Furthermore, a Virtual Safety Car was triggered when debris scattered across Turn 11. A marshal entered the live racing surface to retrieve it, forcing the entire field to slow.

McLaren’s race collapsed before it started. Both Norris and Piastri gambled on intermediate tyres on a track that stayed completely dry, forcing early unplanned pit stops and dropping both drivers to the back. Piastri then hit Alex Albon at Lap 13, retiring the Williams driver and collecting a further 10-second penalty. Norris fought through the midfield only for a terminal mechanical failure to end his race on Lap 40. A double DNF for the reigning champions.

Meanwhile, Sergio Perez retired after rear suspension failure while trying to nurse his Red Bull back to the pitlane. Valtteri Bottas crossed the line with an unserved five-second penalty. Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg both faced active stewards investigations on Lap 57. Gabriel Bortoleto was noted for a potential VSC infringement. Six retirements in total made for one of the more brutal afternoons at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in recent years.

Franco Colapinto delivered Alpine a surprise sixth with a clean, disciplined drive. Lawson recovered to seventh for Racing Bulls. Pierre Gasly added eighth for a useful Alpine double points finish. Carlos Sainz took ninth for Williams, and Ollie Bearman grabbed the final championship point for Haas in tenth. Moreover, Antonelli now has four wins from the last four races. The championship is starting to look one-sided.
