Russell Keeps Austrian GP Pole After Stewards Verdict

Max Verstappen Red Bull crash Austrian Grand Prix qualifying 2026 Red Bull Ring

George Russell put Mercedes on pole position for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix with a lap of 1:06.113 at the Red Bull Ring. Then he sat in the garage and waited. Stewards investigated his pole lap for a yellow flag infringement during the final stages of Q3. The verdict came back with no further action. The pole stands.

The yellow flags appeared when Charles Leclerc locked up at Turn 3 on his final effort and slid off the track. Russell was already mid-lap. The question stewards asked was whether he lifted enough.

Russell told Sky F1 he was five tenths up and two and a half tenths up through the opening sectors when the single yellow appeared. He took a big lift around 100 metres out and lost roughly a tenth and a half through that zone. Everything had felt sweet before that moment. Toto Wolff backed him immediately, confirming to Sky F1 it was a single yellow, not a double, and that Russell managed it correctly. The stewards agreed.

Russell edged out Leclerc by 0.236 seconds. Lewis Hamilton qualified third for Ferrari at 1:06.408, just 0.059 seconds behind his former rival. Kimi Antonelli took fourth in the second Mercedes at 1:06.414. Max Verstappen qualified fifth for Red Bull Racing after surviving his own Q2 scare.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri locked out sixth and seventh for McLaren. Isack Hadjar impressed with eighth for Racing Bulls ahead of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad who completed the Q3 top 10.

Russell had already pointed to what was coming in FP3, topping the timesheets with a 1:07.096. Antonelli was 0.038 seconds back. Hamilton slotted into third. Piastri and Norris made it four different teams in the top five before Verstappen ended the session in sixth after a crash disrupted his running through the Styrian hills.

Verstappen’s Q2 crash was the session’s other major incident. The four-time champion somehow squeezed into Q3 but Red Bull spent the final runs managing the fallout. He later mentioned constant weird interference in his earpiece throughout qualifying.

Norris came in mid-session with his left mirror completely broken off. Sainz collected a black and white flag for driving unnecessarily slowly on an out lap. Perez and Bottas both had sessions cut short by issues dating back to FP2.

Hamilton was 0.77 seconds quickest through the first sector on his final run but could not carry it through the remaining two. On almost any other recent Austrian GP qualifying day that lap takes pole.

Aston Martin had a day to forget. Alonso P21, Stroll P22, nine tenths between them at the bottom of the sheet. The 2026 season has been a nightmare for the team and Saturday in Spielberg changed nothing.

Antonelli leads the 2026 drivers championship with 156 points going into Sunday. Hamilton sits second on 115. Russell starts from pole on 106. If Antonelli has a difficult race the gap closes fast.

Leclerc holds fourth on 75 ahead of Norris on 73 and Piastri on 68. Verstappen starts seventh on the road and holds 55 points. The 2026 Austrian Grand Prix race starts Sunday at 3:00 PM CEST. Nothing about Saturday suggests it will be straightforward for anyone outside the front row.
